My brother's boss saw the wallet I made for him and asked me to make one for her. All I know is she likes red, black and white. I added on a clasp this time. Hope she likes it!

I found this tutorial on sewing a wallet on Lola Nova. I made this for my brother for Christmas, wallets are such a manly man present. Originally I wanted to add in a zipped pouch for change but I had completely forgotten to buy a zip and Christmas was right around the corner so I didn't have enough time. I also had no fasteners to close it (button and clasp seemed too sissy for a man wallet) which I'll add to it next time I see him.

In her tutorial she sews all the way up the middle dividing the note pocket in two. I don't get why she did that so I just sewed the two bottom pockets in half instead.

It's looking a little wonky in this photo. Honestly, I don't think it looks this bad in reality. I'm gonna blame using a different camera and the perspective here..

Reupholstered Chair

Isn't she perty? Yet again, the fabric is Ikea. I was gonna just buy a new chair but I've always wanted to reupholster something. I bought a staple gun from woodies for €15, one of the best things I have ever bought. There's no real "how to" for this. The trick is really just to keep it as taut as possible. Around the corners can be a lill tricky. When you end up with too much fabric like this..

...cut off as much as you can and cut out a v shape like this...

..and just overlap the fabric as neatly as possible in a pleat like way, repeat it a few times...

Bumble Bee Cushion

Before I ramble there's something I've been meaning to do for a while. I got a comment a while back about the Liebster Blog award. Heard of it? Yeah even google doesn't have a real answer for it. It's some blogger way sharing your favourite blogs and giving them a bit of a boost.. I think..

Anyway! One of my favourite blogs is Work In Prowess, who also happens to be a Corkonain. Okay, she did pass this "award" onto me but this isn't some blogger etiquette where I say how great she is because she said some lovely things about this blog. It's one of a few blogs that genuinely makes me laugh.. OUT LOUD. I gotta admit, it's pretty easy to get bored of peoples blogs. Heck, I don't even blame you if you're not reading mine right now. But this one. This one is a keeper.

Numero 2! I'm not sure if this is even bloggy enough for this but Ian Francis is one of my favourite artists. The best thing I love about this is that it's not just images of finished pieces, it's the development of his ideas and studies. If you wanna see his finished work look see here.

And lastly, Stephen Morton. Another art blog. Another Corkonian. I absolutely love his style. You could look at some of his drawings for hours, go back to it and find something you never noticed first time. I hate trying to write out why I love something because it never feels justified so just look at it.

...So yeah, bees are cute. Cushions are huggy. It's a winning combination.

I started off knitting a square cushion cover but it just wasn't bumble enough so I safety pinned the corners of the cushion together to get a rounder plump shape. After sewing the cover up I sewed the corners into a rounder shape as well and just tucked the corners into the cushion. If you do wanna try make something like this you should really knit it round but if you're a little lazy you could do it this way.

Agitate the Gravel Single Launch

Again, the good people from Agitate the Gravel asked me to design their CD sleeve, posters and T-shirt! They've got a looooad of gigs lined up all over the country this month which you can check out on their Facebook to see if they'll be coming to a town near you!

Narwhals - This guy has also been seen dabbling in the collective, Mersk. I've never seen him perform solo so I am really really looking forward to it. If you like electronic/ambient/drone you will love this guy.

Plinth - Well I'll leave it to them to describe their music. Let's see how they describe themselves on facebook ..two secs.. "A finely blended mix of spacore and goatsmilkcore" That is so them. I can't fret enough how much I love them. They kindly uploaded their whole EP just for you. I even hyperlinked that whole sentence to make it easier for you to click on. Look I just did it again. My blabbing won't do them any justice so just press play and listen to it while you're stumbling away or whatever it is you do on the internet. Which song do I recommend, you ask? Ahermadinkidis.

Synthesizer bag

One of my friends asked me to make him a bag after seeing my marker bag tutorial. He wanted me to draw a synthesizer on the cover. I chose to do embroidery instead so it would last longer, look cooler, sher y'know yerself..

This is his new synth!

So I decided to embroider the very same, it's just so pretty. I didn't realise just how long it would take. As I'm kinda new to embroidery it took me roughly 5 minutes to embroider each key. I used fabric from left over curtain material from Ikea aaaand the lining is also Ikea. I don't know what's wrong with me but taking a photo of the bag completely slipped my mind until after I gave it to Dan and he asked was it going up on the blog (yeah I just linked you to his bands website, so what? It's funny, just read it ok) So I took one from my phone. I may retake it someday with my proper camera. The embroidery isn't perfect but sometimes things look nicer when they look homemade.. amiright? The zip didn't turn out as well as I had thought as you can see it's a little crumpled up at the edges.

This has nuthin' to do with me but I thought it was a pretty cool thing to share. I've recently moved houses and during the move we found a few bits and pieces dating back to the 1920's from the woman who lived there previous to us. Maybe it's a little more exciting to find this kinda thing hands on and having a connection to it rather than viewing it in virtual land but y'know vintage photos are like so in. Blogger isn't great for picture quality so clicky to zoomen.

A Junkie's Fix

I can't explain it but I just have a thing for junk. Remember Furbies, pokemon cards, VHS tapes and MY LITTLE PONY?? Still got 'em. Or how 'bout your half broken camera that's been lying in the bottom draw since you were 17? Yerp, still there. I don't know what it it but it just feels wrong to dump stuff. I think I just have this strange middle aged old man mentality of keeping everything. It's only a matter of time that I'll begin to hoard a collection of... kitten calenders. As annoying this habit can be (especially people who have to live with it) it can come in pretty handy. This ole stereo belonged to my Grandad and I immediately jumped in to save it. I have zero interest in analogue radio but I just wanted it. It was lying in my room for I dunno lets say 365 days. And today I decided to spray paint it.
I used Alien spraypaint - Amarillo Claro. T'was only €3 from Vibes and scribes.
I've been so out of the bloggin' days I forgot to take a picture of it beforehand DOI
So you'll just have to take my word for it.

Tea Dyed Wool

I bought a tonne of tea from a cute tea house in Antwerp. It's called Hawaii Cocktail (and yes I only bought it because of the name) I pretty much loved the colour it made more than the actual taste. It has a lovely Ribena-esque tinge to it. So I thought tea stains clothes so why not stain wool? I tested it out first with my white T-Shirt wool.

It also makes your wool smell delicious!

I thought that was pretty much a success so I tried it with plain white wool this time. I added in bowls of coffee and normal tea too just for the heck of it.

Three of my favourite things right there: knitting, tea and things that look like noodles. Yum.

I rolled the wool about six times around my hand for placing it in each bowl. I went from tea to hawaii cocktail to coffee to hawaii cocktail and back to tea again in cycles so I would end up getting more pink in there. The coffee and tea ended up looking samey samey. I left it out to dry in the sun so I think that might have faded it a tad. This is how it knat out..

Old T-Shirt + Scissors = Free Chunky Wool

Chunky wool is expensive so when I found this tutorial today I couldn't resist myself from scounging through my wardrobe of clothes that I haven't worn in years because of the hoarder mentality of "it might come in handy down the line". Of course you're not only limited to t-shirts. Any material that is a little stretchy, that curls when being pulled will do. The yellow one did't curl when tugged but I still think it came out well when knitted.

I did a few swatches just to see how well they'd end up knitting. I think it's only appropriate for hard wearing things like rugs, baskets, cases etc.

Marker Bag

I really should've done this 3 years ago because I always needed something perty for my promarkers. I think they looked a bit depressing in an old tupperware box. I use these for my course and hope to use them for years to come. So maybe this bag will encourage me to bring them out more often outside of college. It is also perfect for a make up travel bag and my GHD actually fits in it pretty snuggly too. I thought it was much easier to make than expected. There's always been a scary taboo of sewing zips for me. I don't know why..

..ANYWAY I cut 4 pieces of fabric, all measuring 13" by 7" (I have alot of promarkers). So the two black and white fabrics are my covers and the red polkadot is my lining. I never really understood why people put prettier fabric in as lining but it is so worth it when you open up that case. The zip is 12" long. I bought a metal one for only €1.19 in Hickeys. I kinda wish I bought a plastic one instead as they run much smoother than metal ones.

Iron out the four pieces of fabric and press roughly 1/4 of an inch on the side you want stitched onto the zip. Do this as straight as you can, use a ruler if you have to.

Pin down your pressed side of all four fabrics onto the zip (I only show one fabric in place for the photo). I actually sewed the front pieces onto the zip first and then went over it again for the lining but it's best if you sew the four pieces at the same time as it looks much neater but might be a little harder to do. Make sure you don't have the fabric too close to the zip as it may get caught on it when you're using it. If this ends up happening, you can always iron it out so it doesn't get caught.

If you find the zip getting in the way when you're sewing, make sure the needle is in the fabric (so you don't lose your place) and raise the presser foot so you can move the zip then lower it again and continue sewing. The picture shows the presser foot raised with the needle still in the fabric, giving enough room to move the zip.

Here I have the lining and the covers stitched onto the fabric. And then you're ready to sew up the sides and bottom! Just make sure you sew about a 1/4 of an inch away from the start of the zip at both ends of the case.

Bass Drum Stencil (Dead School)

These loverly people asked me to paint their band logo (logo?) onto their bass drum skin. This is Dead School, check 'em out on Facebook. They're gigging quite a bit, next one is.. tomorrow at The Quad! Me thinks they have a good few lined up for March also.

This was done with matte enamel paint (won't crack while being used) which you can get in all lovable geeky model painting shops, t'was only 1.40 for a tiny tub in Marks Models. It needed 8 coats, millions of thin coats works out much better than a few heavy blobby coats. I think it turned out crisper than expected as stenciling has not always gone right for me.

As you can see it came out a little blobby after removing the stencil, alot of it was paper too. I used an old flat calligraphy pen from my childhood. One of those things that I just knew I'd have a use for down the line for let's say oh I dunno..what if I become friends with a guy in a band that needs his band name painted on the drum skin and urgently needed something to scrape the left over paint with.. or something like that..

I know there's probably like 3 people that read this little blog but if there's anyone out there who would like me to paint something onto a drum skin (actually, anything!) preferably if you give me something to work from I'd be thrilled to do it for really cheap! And I mean cheap.

Notebook Cover

Yet another Birthday prezzie for a friend, you might even say a bestie. She used always be thee best at writing in school so I'm hoping she'll write some more genuis ideas in this one. The cover is detachable so you can give it a wash or put it on a new notebook roughly the same size. You can always trim the notebooks cover if it's a little too tight to slot into the flaps, I had to trim this down unfortunately.

Whatcha need:
Spiral Notebook
Fabric (durable fabric like upholstery)
Fusible Interfacing (I used a medium weight to suit my fabric)
Bobble or Elastic
Button

So start off measuring around the notebook closed and the length. Mine was 12.7" by 8.3"

Then determine how deep you want the flap to be. I chose 3" and then double it.Cut the interfacing to the notebooks actual measurements so I cut two pieces of 12.7" by 8.3" for the cover and lining. Then two pieces of 6" by 8.3" for the pocket flaps. Then add one inch to the measurements for cutting the fabric so I cut 2 pieces of 13.7" by 9.3" for the cover and I used scrap fabric from an old nurses uniform (thanks to nurse sister). And 2 more pieces of 7" by 9.3". After adding an extra inch mine still turned out too tight so maybe 1.5 would be better?
Iron on the interfacing onto the back of your fabric using instructions given on the fabric. Make sure you have the rougher side touching the fabric. Then fold the flaps in half, wrong sides facing and iron.

With the notebook, measure the elastic (I used a bobble) by placing your thumb where the button should be and wrap to the other side of the notebook. Don't stretch the elastic, then cut it down. Sew it onto the front left of the cover pointing inwards leaving a little bit of the elastic hang out.

Place the lining face up with the two flaps on top with the folds facing inwards and line up the edges. Take more care to line up the interfacing than the actual fabric.

Place the cover on top, wrong side facing and pin down. Start sewing about 1/4 of an inch outside the interfacing leaving a 3 inch gap at the bottom so you can fold it back the right side out.

Then cut down the corners and any fraying threads. Turn it inside out and sew up the remainder bit. You could to a topstitch to give it that extra oomph but I had no space to do it.. Now get up and make it!

Antwerp, Belgium

I visited my friend Alice in Antwerp last week. It has officially topped Edinburgh as my dream place to live now.. sorry Edinburgh. The architecture just drips with detail. This is De Kathedraal. A lill saucy that they charge you a fiver to pray it up with the big man but I totally recommend going. It houses a permanent collection of Peter Paul Rubens paintings. It is literally like a church within a church within a church.. Thee ole classic cruciform layout.

Grote Markt

This is the Momu Fashion Museum. All museums are only 1 euro if you're between the age of 18 and 26 (have to show ID). Me likey! The only thing that I didn't like about this place were the staff. Think of Wilhelmina Slater from Ugly Betty and multiply that by ten. This is also a fashion college so they exhibit students work downstairs which I enjoyed WAY more than the main exhibition (Stephen Jones, Hat Designer)

These are my favourite pieces. This college is meant to have a very high international standard which really shows through these first year works. How jealous are you?

Framed Fabric

Have you ever seen fabric that makes you think - you should hang on my wall not on my skin? I made cushion covers from this Ikea fabric a while back and I always REALLY loved the deer one. So I decided to cut it oot and frame it for a good ole friend of mine (birthday season still on!) I can't fret enough how easy this is to do, you don't need to be a big craft head for this. All you need is yer fabric, frame and a few pins.

So cut out yer fabric around 2 inches extra more outside it. Try to cut your fabric to a standard frame size. Mine was 8 x 10, luckily the image just fitted in.

Sometimes when you buy a frame it might have cardboard in it. This can be your board to wrap the fabric around otherwise just cut out some cardboard. Make sure the fabric wrapped around it will fit into the frame with the back on before you pin anything down. I cut the corners to make it neater so it won't be as bulky. Keep the fabric taut as possible when pinning down and be sure not to pin to the front of the fabric, doi!

Stale T-Shirts

I dunno about you but the birthday season is upon us yet again. Seeing as it's mainly the year of 21st's for me, it's nice to make a special effort. It dawned on me that what's better than a personalised Stale T-shirt?
What's this "Stale" you talk of? Well Stin + Dale = Stale.

So if you ever wanna make yer own T-shirts whether it be for the annual Stale (hoping to become worldwide by 2015) or if you wanna show off your favourite band, quote, the list goes on..

So start off by making a template. It's best to make it out on Word as it's very difficult to get the proportions of each letter absolutely correct and spacing between. Just print off or trace over and cut out. If you wanna use some funky fonts I highly recommend going on www.dafont.com.

I used scraps of material from previous projects (cushion covers!) I decided not cut out the hole for the A as this has a nice effect and saves on not sewing my fingers off.

Iron out your T-shirt and letters and pin on. I had the middle of the letters in line with the bottom of the armpit. Oh and don't use a strechy T-shirt, it's far more difficult to stitch the letters on smoothly.

As I only had a day to make it, this was done pretty rushed. Ideally, when you do applique you should use a fusible pellon which is placed between the letter and the T-shirt. This makes sure the fabric of the letter stitches on smoothly with the T-shirt. Absolutely riveting tutorial explaining applique here. Use the zig zag stitch at a low spaced setting to avoid fraying unless you're using felt, you can go ahead with a straight stitch. It's a little messy as you can see but I'm hoping that adds to it's homemade charm, maybe a backward E would've melted their hearts more!

Who better to model it than Stale themselves! They look pretty chuffed, right?

The Importance of Being a Hoarder

Always, always, always save scraps of material. Even the tiniest ones because if you DO throw it out you'll find an amazing use for it down the line and regret it. I kept the collar off my big man shirt as seen in my previous post!

Currently going through a big This Is England phase (Series 2 currently being written!) and I'm absolutely in love with Lol!

As most shirts don't fit me very well and always look a bit odd after altering to my size I decided to sew the collar onto a black jumper as an attempt to recreate her style! I haven't sewn it yet but it'll pretty much look like this but hopefully a bit neater. I think it'll go great with the skirt (from previous post) tucked under the jumper and shall hopefully give the illusion of a jumper being worn over a dress!

Shirt to Skirt!

I found this tutorial a while back and finally bought a large mens shirt in a charity shop for 4 euro! In the tutorial she suggests using a straight hem, short sleeved shirt. But I think the tapered hem in this shirt has a nice effect, also you have more material to work with a long sleeved shirt, incase you make a mistake!

As for that mind numbingly, confusing step 4, I made up my own version which is to sew the two straps to the back like so:

I also left the front open so you can button it up for a PERFECT fit!

If you ever want to try make your own clothes this is great for a first project! The satisfaction of wearing something you made never dies. It's always a proud moment to reply to a compliment "Why thank you, my dear. I made it myself!"

Dress Skirt Combo!

This little number belongs to my friend, I think I've borrowed this dress off her more times than I've worn any of my own clothes because of the fact that it fits everyone and can be worn as a dress or a skirt and can be worn casual or dressy with whatever accessories so it's pretty much an ultimate dress. I don't think this photo does it justice so you'll just have to take my word for it. It looks basic enough so I had a shot of making my own from fabric that my friend, Alice bought from Africa and an ole red string top to make the bands!

The How To:
This dress works best with strechy fabric unfortunately the fabric I used wasn't so I made sure the bands were ultra strechy. I was contemplating between red or black but the red worked best to bring out more colour in it. I think this dress works best with a block colour for the bands and a nice pattern for the rest.

To make the top part we'll start with the band first. Measure your chest (do this quite taut as we don't want the band to be too loose) and divide it by half. For example I was 28.5" so this makes roughly 14". Cut two strips of this measurement by 4". Sew one end together, fold it in half and iron it.

Next, measure yourself from under your arm to just above your hip. Add an inch for seam allowance. If you're boobless like me there's probably no need to measure the bust but if you do, measure them puppies and divide it by half and add an extra inch for seam allowance. Cut out these two rectangles and sew one end together.

Pin the folded band all along the rectangles. The band should be shorter than the rectangles so keep the band streched out as possible to cover the length of the rectangles. This is making sense right? Sew them together. Make sure you have the front facing sides of both materials facing each other and sew it inside out.

For the bottom part measure your hips and divide by two. Cut two strips of this by 4" and follow the same instructions as the first band. Measure from your hips to your desired skirt length. I doubled the width of the skirt compared to the top part so the width was 28x2=56" Divide both of these measurements by half and add an extra inch for seam allowance for the length. Sew one end together.

Sewing the band to the skirt is harder than the top part as the difference in length is greater. I used the pleated technique. I didn't want the pleat to show up so I didn't iron it and if you're a little bit inaccurate it won't show up.

So organise the skirt like this, pin it to the band and sew it up!

This is how mine ended up, it may not be totally perfect but it fits poifect. This dress is better shown off on a human so here's an awkwardly posed photo to give you a better idea.

Handmade Envelopes + More Button Rings!

I set up my stall for the first time last Saturday so I needed some small bags for the earrings. We made these from old wage slip envelopes that was about to be thrown out and just wrapped with colourful magazine cut outs!

I went through a BIG button phase. Here are some rings I made recently. Just two buttons sewn together and super glued on top of plain rings bought from vibes and scribes. A little kiddy-ish looking but I likey.

Bangles Shmangles

I made some of these today. All you need are some plain ole plastic bangles (very cheap from penneys!) and left over wool! I pretty much hoard everything, even little strands of wool from other projects so it's nice to find a use for them. After wrapping the wool, just dab a little bit of super glue as neatly as you can on the inside. And wolla!

and matching earrings too!

Also, how cool is this?

I had to use a wee little chalice cup to model my hats for me.
These are all knitted (knat!). The first image is taken from a pattern a friend gave me and all the others were trial and error.

Earrings!

These are some earrings I've made over the last year. It's been a slow process. Quality is poor as the colours should be far more vibrant. I'll post better ones someday. That along with hats and paintings, I'm going to try and set up a stall for this summer.

Glen walk

Look closely, there's a horse!

Along the glen walk there's a steep descent into a small forest, along with a river passing through. I found a tree knocked over full of fungus. I absolutely fell in love with it. I might try and paint this sometime or print it on canvas and manipulate it in some way.

The photo on top had it's levels changed on the computer to give a green colour and on the bottom it was achieved by placing an ivy leaf at a certain angle infront of the flash. I prefer the second by far. I need to get out of the habit of using the computer to change a photo. It feels like I'm cheating.
